In a recent issue of the British Medical Journal, Swedish doctors reported that infants born during hospital shift changes face a higher risk of death in their first week of life. The study, conducted by Dr. Johan Karlberg of the University of Hong Kong, revealed that evening, mid-morning, and late night hours were the most dangerous for newborns. Investigators say poorly managed shift changes and heavy workloads contributed to infant deaths. Less experienced workers during night hours were also a factor. The study examined data from more than two million babies born in Sweden between 1973 and 1995.
