Health officials investigating the mysterious deaths of three Minnesota men who died after undergoing elective knee surgery made a stunning discovery last week when they found that one of the men may have contracted a fatal infection from donor tissue taken from a cadaver. Doctors report that the 23-year-old man, who had been in otherwise perfect health, was killed by the rare but deadly clostridium bacterium.
The investigation intensified when it was discovered that four other cases of donor tissue contamination were reported in Florida and Louisiana. The Minnesota case is the first involving a fatality. Researchers are unsure how the tissue became tainted.
Tissue banks are not required by law to screen for bacterial disease.
