Due to an increasing number of complaints from airline workers and passengers that cabin air is making them sick, the National Academy of Sciences released a report last week asking the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to intensify research on air quality in commercial aircraft.
The academy claims the FAA has not conducted adequate research on cabin air quality since smoking was banned over ten years ago. Health officials and toxicologists who helped write the report argue that because so little research has been conducted, it is difficult to make proper connections between consumer health complaints and contaminated cabin air.
A spokesperson for the FAA said there was no need for alarm but that the report's recommendations would be thoroughly reviewed.
