Three people were injured last week when a Cessna airplane in route to Gainesville Regional Airport from Alabama crashed in Gilchrist County, Florida. Although the injuries did not appear to be life threatening, the plane's two passengers and pilot were treated at a local hospital.
The Cessna reportedly lost electrical power around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night. The pilot was forced to attempt a dangerous nighttime emergency landing with no lights. Sheriff officials, who were contacted by one of the passengers using his cellular phone, said the pilot did a remarkable job of landing the plane considering the circumstances.
Sheriff's Deputy Barry Cannon and Sgt. Tony Smith found one of the plane's occupants who had left the Cessna to seek help. The passenger guided the officers back to the aircraft, which had crashed in a rye field.
