The New Year started on a sad note for five passengers of a plane that crashed outside of Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon. The twin-engine Piper Navajo Chieftain, a small propeller plane owned by Air Taxi Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, apparently ran out of fuel before slamming into the shallow waters off Dania Beach Pier.
The accident left one passenger dead and four others injured. Hundreds attending an Orange Bowl party near the pier witnessed the fatal crash. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have yet to determine the exact cause of the accident but officials say the pilot radioed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport several times complaining of low fuel levels.
NTSB investigators say the plane reportedly departed the Bahamas fully loaded with fuel, more than enough for the 221-mile trip.
