Pap Smear Results Often Inconclusive

January 16, 2002

According to medical experts, an increasing number of Pap smear tests yield inconclusive results, causing frustration and anxiety in women who desperately want to know if they suffer from cervical cancer. Annually, over two million such tests are returned with inconclusive results. Doctors say that abnormalities indicated by inconclusive tests are difficult to analyze and leave them with little confidence in making a proper diagnosis.

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) publishes recommendations suggesting methods of dealing with inconclusive Pap smear results. To end uncertainty, the AMWA recommends that women retake the smear test, undergo a colposcopy (an inspection of the vagina or cervix with a magnified instrument), and take a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women. Statistics indicate that nearly 5,000 out of the estimated 13,000 women diagnosed with cervical cancer each year die from the disease.
