The wreckage of an Ecuadorian commercial jet that disappeared Monday morning was found late yesterday afternoon by local farmers and troops combing the Colombian border. Rescuers searching the peak of Nevado de Cumbal, a 15,721-foot-high volcanic mountain near Cumbal, Colombia, discovered what remained of the plane's fuselage scattered across the mountainside. Local peasants reported hearing a loud explosion near the mountain's peak Monday morning.
Rescue workers climbed five hours before reaching the crash site. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the TAME Boeing 727 about twenty minutes after it departed Ecuador's capital, Quito, in route to an airport in the town of Tulcan. The Nevado de Cumbal volcano is near the approach path into Tulcan. None of the ninety-two passengers on board are believed to have survived the crash.
