Three doctors employed at Boston's Children's Hospital received warning letters from the state medical board concerning their involvement in the October 2000 death of a 13-month-old girl. Taylor McCormack died while waiting for an operation to drain fluid from her brain. Health officials say a tragic chain of events unfolded that led to the infant's death.
Dr. Craig van Horne, the hospital's senior surgeon, was cited for failing to answer his beeper on the night in question. He told investigators that he turned his pager off before going to sleep. Because of Horne's absence, the child's care was left in the hands of residents Dr. Tien Nguyen and Dr. Adel Malek. The medical board says both residents failed to consult other physicians, and the delay in operating on the girl later proved fatal.
