Nurses throughout the State of Florida are concerned. Research indicates that many Florida hospitals are understaffed. The shortage is forcing nurses to take on higher caseloads, which can result in diminished care for patients. But a group of 5,000 nurses and other health care professionals is fighting back. The caregivers have formed a union and their cries for help are growing louder. The union has asked Florida Governor Jeb Bush to initiate legislation that would set minimum staffing standards in hospitals. Currently, sixteen percent of nursing positions in Florida hospitals are unfilled, six percent greater than the national average.
