In recent months, doctors have questioned St. John's Wort's interaction with other drugs, namely medications for HIV / AIDS, cancer, heart disease, organ transplants, and seizures. Health officials say the herbal dietary supplement, when used simultaneously, may cause the liver to process these medications differently.
According to a new study conducted by Sweden's Medical Products Agency, St. John's Wort may also affect the success of birth control pills. Researchers involved in the study revealed to health professionals that at least two women became pregnant while using both the pill and the supplement. St. John's Wort, which is used to treat depression, is not a prescription medication and as such the Food and Drug Administration does not closely regulate it.
