A California woman who sued a county hospital for medical malpractice after doctors amputated both of her legs during stomach surgery has settled her claim for $1.35 million. Elizabeth Stevens underwent lower intestinal surgery in December 2000 at Contra Costa County Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California. During the operation, Stevens suffered complications that resulted in blood clotting, a stroke and loss of blood flow to her legs. The surgeons were forced to amputate. The plaintiff claimed the doctors had not detected the problems in a timely manner. County risk managers acknowledged the surgical error declaring that the hospital failed to "diagnose or treat Stevens' surgical complications."
