A study released by Doctor Alejandro C. Arroliga from The Cleveland Clinic Foundation found that one in five patients who die in the ICU have been misdiagnosed by their doctor. The study, published in the medical journal Chest examined the medical records of over 400 ICU patients. Post-death autopsies confirmed that the patients died of conditions that differed from what their doctors had diagnosed. Doctor Arroliga concluded that many of the dead patients may have survived if their doctors had diagnosed their condition correctly. The study's findings show that "advances in diagnostic technology have not diminished the value of autopsy," Doctor Arroliga stated.
