Hospital Negligent For Experimental Brain Surgery

June 14, 2002

A jury awarded $7.5 million this week to a Kansas woman who suffered irreversible brain injuries after undergoing an experimental neurological procedure without her consent. Mary Lou Zimmerman was suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder in 1998 when she decided to come to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for brain surgery to fight the illness. Dr. Gene Barnett, the attending neurosurgeon, used several procedures, one that had been performed only once, during the operation without Zimmerman's written consent. The procedure left her unable to walk, eat or stand by herself. The Clinic plans to appeal the decision.
