According to a recent report in the Chicago Tribune, over 100,000 deaths in 2000 were due to nosocomial (occurring in a hospital) infections, the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The figure is more than 10 percent higher than had been estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The newspaper indicates that 75 percent of the fatalities were preventable, with most being blamed on unsanitary hospital conditions.
The report revealed that over 70 percent of all hospitals in the United States have been cited for unsanitary conditions in the past seven years. A spokesperson for the American Hospital Association blamed the eye-opening figures on unprecedented cost-cutting measures taken in the medical community.
