The family of a man who died from injuries he sustained when a streetlight detached from its pole and struck him in the head settled a product liability lawsuit recently for $4.1 million. On March 20, 2000 Sabu Sims was walking on a public avenue in San Dimas, California when a 38-pound light fixture fell 20 feet onto his head. He died approximately one month later from a pulmonary thrombolism, a complication from brain trauma caused by the light fixture.
Sims' wife and two children filed suit against the city as well as Environmental Lighting for Architecture, which manufactured and designed the light fixture, and HMS Construction Co., the streetlight's installer.
