Wyeth Changes Prescribing Information for Prempro and Premarin

Pharmaceutical maker Wyeth announced today that it has changed the prescribing information on its hormone replacement medications Prempro and Premarin in light of recent reports questioning the safety of the drugs. In July, a study conducted by The Women's Health Initiative found that women using Prempro faced an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, heart disease and blood clots. A second study conducted by researchers with the National Cancer Institute linked Premarin use to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. The new labels advise potential users to remain on the medications for the shortest time possible and to not use Prempro or Premarin to prevent heart disease or osteoporosis. The results of the July studies will be included in the prescription information.
