A bullet-resistant vest company is facing allegations that its product fails to prevent ammunition from penetrating armor. Last week, the New York State Labor Department concluded that at least 900 vests purchased from Oakland Park, Florida-based Point Blank and worn by New York City police officers were defective. According to NYPD tests, the vests did not perform properly, with at least one having "full penetration from a single gunshot." In response, the NYPD has reportedly returned one-fourth of all Point Blank vests sold to the department, roughly 6,300.
Tests conducted by a law firm suing Point Blank for shareholder fraud found parallel results. The firm alleges that fragments from several .357-caliber hollow point bullet rounds penetrated similar Point Blank vests. A spokesperson for the company denied the allegations, saying the NYPD tests were flawed and used bullets the vests were not designed to stop.
