A woman whose son was born with cerebral palsy 19 years ago has settled a lawsuit with a suburban Chicago hospital for $19 million. In 2000, Patricia Townsend filed suit against Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park for negligence, alleging nurses failed to act when monitors showed the fetus' heart rate dropping. According to the lawsuit, it was not until a day later that a physician ordered an emergency Caesarean section. Townsend's son, Damen, now weighs only 53 pounds, cannot speak and uses a wheelchair.
