New York Product Liability Lawsuit Involving LASIK Surgery Seeks $40 Million

A New York woman who suffered permanent eye damage when a laser blade snapped during vision-correction surgery has filed a lawsuit against the blade's manufacturer for $40 million. In March 2001, Sharon Guess underwent laser vision-correction surgery at a clinic in Rochester. During the procedure, a blade made by Bausch & Lomb Inc. snapped off and cut her cornea, causing heavy scarring and hazy vision in her right eye. The lawsuit alleges Bausch & Lomb knowingly distributed the single-use blade, called an Accuglide, with a weak spot that was capable of breaking when subjected to stress.
