Americans Not Exercising Enough

May 16, 2001

The United States Surgeon General's office recently released a "Report on Physical Activity and Health." The report revealed that Americans are living more sedentary lives, thus creating physical and health risks. More than 60% of adults do not complete the recommended amount of physical activity, another 25% are not active at all. As such, 60% of Americans are overweight, many dangerously so.

Unfortunately, 250,000 people die prematurely every year due to lack of physical activity. This is an obvious problem considering that many diseases stem from obesity, including high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and many musculoskeletal conditions.

Some people fail to understand that changing one's lifestyle to incorporate more physical activity does not mean that excessive exercise is necessary. Incorporating a short exercise routine two to three times a week is all that is necessary to begin a healthier life. Of course, there are many benefits to living a more physically active life. For example, people who engage in regular physical activity benefit from consistent weight control, more strength of muscles and muscle mass, and a better overall quality of life.

Other statistics show that almost 80% of people who begin an exercise program will quit within less than a month. Many people cite reasons such as pain, lack of support, and lack of time as reasons why they quit.

The bottom line? Incorporating exercise into one's life is an excellent idea. Remember to always see your doctor prior to starting a new exercise program.
