Connecticut Nursing Home Fire Kills 10, Injures 23

February 26, 2003

A fire broke out at a Connecticut nursing home Wednesday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring nearly two-dozen others. Fire officials and a spokesperson for Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez told reporters that one suspect, a resident at the 150-bed Greenwood Health Care Center, was arrested and is being questioned by authorities. Twenty-three people were taken to several local hospitals for treatment, most of them suffering from smoke inhalation.

Fire Marshal Bill Abbott said the cause of the fire had not been determined but revealed that it appeared "to have started in a room." The fire reportedly began around 2:30 a.m. and was under control by 4 a.m. Firefighters said the evacuation was difficult as most residents are bedridden, confined to wheelchairs, blind or mentally retarded.
