Youth Violence An Epidemic

May 25, 2001

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher recently issued a report detailing the youth violence epidemic in this country. Satcher reported that while the use of guns appears to be down, physical violence remains at an all time high, almost 70% higher than in 1983. He called for educational programs for families and teachers in order to train those closest to young people on effective methods to intervene and prevent violence. Satcher said that jail and stricter enforcement of laws were not the best answers for youthful offenders.

In 1999 over 100,000 young people were arrested for violent crime offenses, 1,400 of which were homicides. Satcher cites lack of family and too much "free time" as major causes of violence. Additionally, parents should monitor their child's peer group and weed out any undesirables.
