Trampoline Accidents Increase

July 3, 2001

Doctors urge you to protect your children from trampoline injuries. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) announced that the number of Americans treated annually for trampoline injuries has tripled since 1991, exceeding 100,000. The majority of those injured are under the age of 14.

The AAOS reports that sprains and fractures are the most common injuries. However, severe trampoline injuries can interfere with growth, cause paralysis and even death.

Trampolines are cheaper than ever before. As such, the AAOS fears that injuries will increase dramatically. The organization is frustrated that trampoline accidents do not command the same attention as swimming pool safety.

Trampoline accidents usually occur when someone falls through or off of the mat, hits the rim, or lands badly while attempting tricks and maneuvers. Trampolines are particularly dangerous when two or more children jump together.
