A woman who left her Jeep Grande Cherokee idling and unattended for a moment learned an important lesson: apply the parking brake. The 1998 Cherokee suddenly shifted into reverse, despite the fact that there was no one in the vehicle, and accelerated across a highway and down a slope, until brought to an abrupt stop by a tree.
When the woman's husband complained to DaimlerChrysler, the car's manufacturer, his claim was dismissed. DaimlerChrysler officials simply refused to believe the story; instead, they accused the woman of failing to properly park the Cherokee. "The company has denied there being anything wrong with the vehicle, but that does not explain why it went into reverse," the husband said in a complaint sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "This vehicle has a serious defect and is dangerous."
