Lasik eye surgery is performed to improve patients' vision, however, on occasion it seems to do just the opposite. The latest concern? Post-surgical dry eyes, a potentially debilitating condition which can be permanent. In a recent study of nearly 50 Lasik patients, researchers reported in the journal Ophthalmology that irritated, dry eyes were a common complaint. While the moisture in most of the patients' eyes eventually returned, several suffered from the condition for an extended period of time. The head of the research team, Dr. Lisa Battat, says that doctors who perform the laser procedure should do a better job informing their patients on the potential side effects, including dry eyes.
While all Lasik patients experience temporary dryness, Dr. Battat found that several of the study participants complained of the condition 18 months after the procedure was performed. She hopes her findings will educate not only potential Lasik patients, but also their laser eye surgeons, many of whom dismiss dry eyes as a trivial side effect.
