Trying to capitalize on Bayer AG's Baycol recall, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. is offering Baycol users a free one-month supply of its own cholesterol-lowering drug, Pravachol. Three major national newspapers carried ads publicizing Bristol-Myers Squibb's offer. Merck & Co. also is promoting its cholesterol drug Zocor in light of the Baycol recall. Baycol is linked to 52 deaths worldwide, prompting its recall last week.
Bristol-Myers ran its ads in USA Today, The New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Market analysts believe Bristol-Myers is being more aggressive marketing Pravachol because the drug is steadily losing business to Pfizer's Lipitor and Merck's Zocor.
