Florida's health care industry is facing its worst nursing shortage in over ten years, according to a recent study by The Florida Hospital Association. The Association reported that Florida hospitals have a nursing vacancy rate of 16 percent. Over 8,400 nursing jobs were reported unfilled in 2000, up four percent from 1999 and almost five percent higher than the national average.
Factors leading to the abandonment of the industry include high levels of stress and fewer women showing interest in nursing.
Florida's population increase has led to a greater need for nurses; as such, the State has the third worst shortage in the country.
