Dawn Mist Mouth Rinse may have been responsible for the deaths of six hospital patients in Fargo, North Dakota. In fact, the maker of the mouthwash and its distributor settled with families of the deceased patients rather than risk a court proceeding. The 1999 deaths at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo were attributed to the Burkholderia cepacia bacterium, a waterborne germ that was found in the mouthwash. The bacterium affects victims with weak immune systems and respiratory disease.
Hi City Manufacturing, along with Tampa, Florida importer Donovan Industries, did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement. In a separate action, the companies settled with a patient who survived an infection associated with Burkholderia cepacia.
