The victims of a 1997 traffic accident in Newburgh, New York caused by a missing stop sign settled their lawsuit in June 2001 for $585,000. Kim Ogonowski, a defendant, unknowingly drove through the intersection where the stop sign was missing and slammed into Vincent Denisi's car. Witnesses testified that the stop sign had been missing for at least two weeks.
Denisi, who underwent three surgical procedures and was out of work for three years due to his injuries, sued Ogonowski and the City of Newburgh for $750,000. The case settled for $585,000-Ogonowski paying $135,000 and the City of Newburgh $450,000.
