A Lehigh County, Pennsylvania woman was awarded $2.9 million by a jury last week, almost doubling what the defendant previously offered as a settlement. Jane Baker sued her former friend, Judith Fulmer, after Fulmer's truck hit Baker as she was walking home from a dinner party. Fulmer failed to stop after striking Baker with her car, telling investigators she was unaware she had hit anyone. Both women admitted to drinking before the accident.
Fulmer had offered $1.5 million to settle out of court but Baker was seeking close to $6 million, as she was angered because Fulmer fled the scene. Jurors based their decision, which attorneys say is at the "high end" for the Pennsylvania community, on Baker's severe injuries. One of Baker's arms was left paralyzed, robbing her of many of the activities she used to enjoy.
Baker will use the money for future medical expenses and personal care.
