Three Die After Knee Surgery in Minnesota

November 19, 2001

The mysterious deaths of three men who became ill after undergoing elective knee surgery at two hospitals in Minnesota has led the State Health Department to request a suspension of all elective knee surgeries for one week. Brian Lykins, 23, and Wayne Hulterstrum, 78, died November 11 after knee surgery at St. Cloud Hospital. Three days later an unidentified third man also died after a similar procedure was performed at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. Two of the men had undergone knee replacement surgery while the third had a cartilage graft. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has joined in the investigation.

Investigators have reported that the rare but deadly clostridium bacterium may have been found in the blood of one of the men. Final reports will not be available until later this week. All three men were in excellent physical shape before their conditions quickly and mysteriously declined.
