In an effort to demonstrate the dangers certain holiday decorations pose to homeowners, the Broward County Fire Rescue Department recently staged a fire in a mock living room. The room was arranged with typical American holiday decorations. A Christmas tree adorned with gifts stood near a lit candle and an overloaded electrical outlet. The candle and overburdened outlet combined to start a raging fire which quickly engulfed the entire room.
Firefighters warn that burning candles should never be left unattended. Such candles account for three percent of all residential fires. It should also be noted that dogs and cats have a tendency to knock over candles. Additionally, officials recommend that homeowners water Christmas trees often to avoid other fire hazards.
