The family of a Connecticut man who died from injuries suffered when a resident physician punctured the man's pulmonary artery was awarded $8.1 million by a Hartford jury last week. The error occurred while resident John DeBarros conducted a biopsy of Theodore Stolarz's lymph node. After the procedure Stolarz, 62, suffered a stroke and lapsed into a coma. He died seven months later in a nursing home.
The resident was supervised by Dr. Louis Brown of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Jurors determined that resident DeBarros acted as an "agent" of the hospital, thus making Dr. Brown and St. Francis both liable.
