Children's Hospital - Boston

The death of a 5-year-old boy at Children's Hospital in Boston has sparked an investigation into the facility's clinical services. Matty Siravo died in May 2003 of an epileptic seizure, just hours after surgeons implanted electrodes into his skull to monitor the child's epilepsy. Siravo suffered epileptic attacks since his first birthday. Initial reports released in September 2003 by the state Department of Health allege that critical accountability and communication problems exist among the medical staff at the hospital, which may have contributed to the death of Siravo.

According to reports, the child suffered a prolonged seizure seven hours after entering the intensive care unit at Children's. Doctors allegedly administered incorrect drug dosages after the seizure began and failed to recognize the child was not breathing. It was not until the attending physician arrived over an hour later that doctors inserted a breathing tube, but Siravo went into cardiac arrest and suffered massive brain damage. He died two days later. Officials with Children's Hospital insist they have implemented new procedures since the incident to ensure similar mistakes never occur again.
