Influenza is a virus that causes "the flu" and commonly appears in winter as either the influenza A or influenza B strand. Symptoms associated with the flu such as headaches, aches and pains, fever, cough, and runny nose usually last only a few days, yet more severe cases can continue for over a week. You can significantly reduce your risk of being infected with the influenza virus through the injection of a flu vaccine or "flu shot."
Recently, some pharmaceutical companies have developed drugs that are taken after the onset of flu symptoms. These drugs purportedly reduce the duration of flu symptoms by at least one day. Many physicians remain skeptical regarding the efficacy of these drugs and significant concerns have been raised about their safety.
