Snowboards: Overview

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), snowboarding is the fastest growing winter sport and is rapidly gaining popularity at ski resorts across the country.

The CPSC estimates that over 27,000 snowboarders are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year. Unlike skiing, where the majority of injuries involve the knee, the greatest number of snowboarding injuries involve the wrist or arm. However, snowboarders and skiers are equally likely to sustain shoulder injuries. Factors contributing to snowboarding accidents include a general lack of skill and reckless behavior.

Over half of all snowboarding accidents involve boarders between the ages of 15 and 24. Males account for the majority of injuries, as the sport has traditionally been popular among young men. Nevertheless, snowboarding is quickly catching on as a family sport. In addition, more women are picking up boards each year.

Since 1991, the CPSC has received reports of five deaths associated with snowboarding. Surprisingly, most of the fatalities occurred when boarders suffocated after falling into deep snow.
