Tanning Beds: Safety

Over one million Americans in search of sexy and safe tans use artificial tanning beds. Many people believe that tanning beds offer the same benefits as a natural suntan, without the associated risk of developing skin cancer.

A recent study has found that an artificial tan is no safer than the real thing. Researchers with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine determined that just like natural sunlight, the artificial light found in tanning salon facilities can cause cell damage which may lead to skin cancer.

A study appearing in the October 2003 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that tanning beds increase the risk of malignant melanoma. According to the study, which used data from the Women's Lifestyle and Health Cohort Study in Norway and Sweden, women between the ages of 20 and 29 using artificial tanning systems once or more per month increase their risk of melanoma by about 150 percent.

See your doctor if you are concerned about your skin. If you have been injured by artificial tanning, it may be important to contact an attorney who can help you protect your legal rights. Please keep in mind that there may be time limits within which you must commence suit.
