Washer & Dryer: Product Safety
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that there are 16,700 fires, 30 deaths and 430 injuries associated with clothes dryers each year. Improper maintenance contributes to a majority of these fires. Some of these fires can occur when lint and dust build up in the filter or in the exhaust duct. Under certain conditions, when lint and dust block the flow of air, excessive heat build-up can cause a fire in some dryers. In addition, both washers and dryers can pose a suffocation threat to children who mistakenly lock themselves into the appliances.
