Simulect, made by the pharmaceutical company Novartis AG, is an immunosuppresant drug primarily used to combat the body's rejection of transplanted kidneys. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Simulect in 1998.
During a recent study, researchers compared the effects of Simulect with Sangstat Medical Corp.'s similar drug, Thymoglobulin. Dr. Daniel Brennan, a transplant specialist with Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., who oversaw the trial, revealed that Simulect patients were nearly three times more likely to suffer an acute kidney rejection than those who took Thymoglobulin.
