Dangerous Household Products: Overview
Many otherwise harmless looking household products can nevertheless turn out to be extremely hazardous and even deadly. From defective cleaning fluids and electronic items to dangerous furnishings, one must remain vigilant in order to ensure that such products do not make it into the home.
The Federal government has implemented programs to curb the design and manufacture of defective household products. When Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Act in 1972, it created the Consumer Product Safety Commission or "CPSC." The CPSC regulates over 15,000 types of consumer products, from automatic-drip coffee makers to toys to lawn mowers. The CPSC often plays an active role in initiating and / or coordinating recalls of its regulated household products. While the CPSC has compiled an excellent regulatory record, dangerous household products still exist.
