Many bodybuilding dietary supplements contain the substance 1,4-butanediol or "BD." The makers of these products promote 1,4-butanediol as a miracle substance capable of everything from building muscles to increasing sexual performance. Products containing 1,4-butanediol are available without a prescription and are heavily marketed on the internet.
1,4-butanediol became popular as a "safe" substitute for banned bodybuilding substances such as gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) and gamma-butyrolactone (gbl). 1,4-butanediol is found in many products including: Thunder Nectar, InnerG, Amino flex, Rejuv+Nite, Liquid Gold, Thunder, Serenity, X-12 and N-Force. 1,4-butanediol is also found in many industrial solvents.
Some weight conscious people ingest the substance because it can have the intoxicating effect of alcohol with less calories. Concerns over 1,4-butanediol's dangerous side effects continue to mount. 1,4-butanediol can cause loss of consciousness that can lead to coma and death. At least 50 people have died after using products containing the supplement.
