Fat Trapper: Overview
"Fat Trappers" are usually products containing the naturally occurring chemical, chitosan. Chitosan is found in the exo-skeletons of shrimp and shellfish and is marketed based on its ability to "trap" fat before it can be digested by the body. The fat binds to chitosan fibers, forming a large indigestible mass in the body that is then expelled.
Recent studies indicate that chitosan supplements have no effect on an individual's weight. Some researchers are concerned that chitosan may bond to nutrients and prevent their absorption into the body.
It is estimated that consumers spent $6,000,000 on "Fat Trappers" in 2000.
